Warm Blooded is the third single from Brisbane-based singer-songwriter-producer Keelan Mak. As you can gather, it contrasts with the idea of being “cold-blooded”. It’s people who think they’re being warm and welcoming with the best intentions, however, humans are mostly cruel and selfish creatures who will turn their backs the moment it’s convenient and beneficial.
With brooding vocals and a thick intoxicating mix of sultry late nights, smoky and fragrant, Mak unapologetically calls out the bullshit and asks, “why would you do these things to me, you think you’re a good person but you’ve deliberately hurt me for what reason?” Speaking on the single, he says:
“I spent the last year trying to over-compensate with the production, but ‘Warm Blooded’ was almost like a homage to my young indie rock lover past. I listened to a lot of Frank Sinatra and Matt and was trying to be a little more vocally interesting. The verses are super low in my register and they’re borderline theatrical in performance, on top of a fairly simple groove and production.”
Recently winning the AMEX Music Backers grant, Keelan Mak was also a finalist in the 2018 Billy Thorpe and was one of two hand-picked showcasing artists representing triple j unearthed at BIGSOUND 2018.
