Newcomer Eden Samara Eden Samara grew up in the mountains of Nelson, BC writing folk songs, performing in choirs, and sneaking out to raves to listen to dubstep. As a child, she fell into musical theatre and eventually moved to Toronto to pursue her career as an actor while still writing music on the side. It wasn’t until an inspiring solo trip in Europe which pushed her to delve deeper into her music.
Upside Down is Samara’s debut single and the beginning of her love letter to life as an awkward 20-something in the digital age. Crunchy percussion and soft notes blossom into a cool honeycomb of catchy electronic beats flushed with traces of uncertain words and Samara’s delicate vocals. In her premiere with Sidewalk Hustle, Samara explained the meaning behind the single:
“’Upside Down’ is about the frustration of being smitten with someone who can’t make up their mind how they feel about you. One day they’re ripping your clothes off, the next they’ve decided that they are no longer interested… then they change their mind again and the cycle keeps repeating itself in a merry-go-round of lust and confusion.
I think we can all relate to that feeling of allowing yourself to be totally played by someone who only shows interest in you when it’s convenient for them.”
Eden Samara’s “Days” EP is due later this year and is a collection of songs detailing the confusion of millennial existence.
