With a new EP set for this spring, London-based John Joseph Brill has released the first single of the same title, I’m Not Alright.
Brill takes a departure from previous work as he employs a light 80’s ambiance with his warm Matt Berninger-esque baritone that seeps into your pores. It’s the kind of warmth you don’t know you need but most certainly do. “At the time of writing the song I’d just been through a break-up and found myself broke and with nowhere to live,” explained Brill, continuing, “And while superficially that’s what the song’s about, it grew into something deeper for me. These are strange and uncertain times and I really believe that no matter what your story is, everyone should feel like if they need to, they can raise their hand and say “I’m Not Alright” and for that to be OK.“
Broken down and beaten, Brill leaves us with an intimate single with detailed textures and the majestic breeze of ethereal vocals that hum from the recess of your soul – and it is sublime and one that you’ll listen to over and over.
