UK-based singer-songwriter Jorja Smith has just released a nostalgic new visual for her song, Teenage Fantasy. Situated in Paris, France, the video showcases Smith and a friend, whose resemblance of Smith is strikingly apparent, as they dance and saunter along the dimly lit streets of Paris. Time appears to have slowed down in the hazy and cinematic short film. The entire video is shot in black and white, and with glitchy and blurred visual effects, it feels as if you’re watching an old reel from the 60s. The video production could not have been any better suited for the song.
Teenage Fantasy is a tale of love, confusion, and self-affirmation as Smith relinquishes both the joys and the heartaches of teenage relationships in exchange for putting her future first. She explores the romanticized ideals of love as a teenager and accentuates the double-edged paradox that teens and non-teens alike face in relationships: “We all want a teenage fantasy. Want it when we can’t have it, when we got it we don’t seem to want it.” As someone who has recently graduated from my teenage years, I could not agree with Jorja anymore.
Channeling 60s feels isn’t the only thing that makes it seem like Smith is ahead of her time. At only 20 years old, her lyricism exemplifies an innate sophistication that complements her mature, jazzy and soulful vocals. However, don’t be mistaken, her smooth tones are nonetheless modern. With somber piano arrangements over a sultry, slowed-down R&B beat, Teenage Fantasy is a captivating track that will have you reminiscing about your teenage years.
