It’s been almost a year since Richmond, Virginia-based Andrew Siegel, otherwise known as Standard Legal, has released anything. He’s now returned with the bleak and spellbinding Outside Maryland.
A steely drum thuds along as a passive Siegel begins uttering surreal lines draped in the raw contours of melancholy. A minute in, the raucous dissonance strikes with the bitter gnaw from Siegel’s belly, and a fever burns and rises from the soles of his feet and through the cracks of his soft bones. Outside of his head, and outside of Maryland, there is no cure, no escape, just savage despair that snorts and scratches itself at the break of dawn. A glass needle burrows into his cranium with the suffering of moonlight and gorges on grinning fears.
Meditative and intimate, Outside Maryland is a must listen.
